Wife’s Birthday DNA Test Gift To Husband Reveals They’re Actually Related!

Wife’s Birthday DNA Test Gift To Husband Reveals They’re Actually Related!

I’ve always wanted to do one of those DNA test things where you send off a swab of your saliva and it comes back with all the information about your ancestors and history. I mean imagine discovering you’re in fact related to some royal family member and you’re the queen you always wanted to be! How cool right? Or imagine you discover that you and your husband are actually related….hahaha…wait…what?!

Yes! One unsuspecting wife thought it would be a cool gift idea for hubby to get him one of those DNA test kits. But perhaps she would’ve been better off with socks and undies.

In a letter sent to Slate’s Dear Prudence Podcast, the anonymous wife said that she and her husband grew up in the same small town and have a 2-year-old son together.

“For a birthday present, I got both of us an ancestry kit,” she said. “I wish to God I never came up with the idea.”

You see the results showed that they were in fact FIRST COUSINS! Not distant third or fourth twice removed sort of thing. Nope- FIRST COUSINS!

Now the husband is totally shook by the news and needs some time to get over it. “This news unsettles me and has left my husband’s world in tatters,” she explained. “His parents have been married for 30 years and my husband always held his mother close to sainthood.”

In fact the husband can’t even share a bedroom with his cousin, oops we mean wife anymore cause he’s totally freaked out!

Plus, the wife is still confused as HOW the two are actually related because at the moment all fingers are pointing to the mother in law having had a bit of action on the side with one of the wife’s uncles while married.

“All my uncles are happily married, I thought,” she wrote. “I find myself looking through photo albums of our childhood together and trying to figure out the truth.”

Her family is due to come and visit the couple soon and the wife says she doesn’t know how to tell them.

“This secret is poisoning my marriage, and I am terrified it will blow up the rest of our family,” she wrote. “My father-in-law likes to rhapsodise how he married the first girl he ever kissed. This is going to kill him.”

Podcasts hosts Daniel Mallory Ortberg and Connor Goldsmith try to offer support to the woman saying it’s no big deal- in fact there are many places in the world where marrying your first cousin is perfectly normal and acceptable.

“You’re cousins,” Goldsmith told her. “You’re not siblings. You didn’t grow up thinking of yourself related. There are plenty of places around the world where people marry their first cousins and it’s not considered that weird,” he added. “Unless your husband simply can’t live with this, I don’t see the upside in blowing up this marriage, potentially, 30 years later.”

I think besides the fact that the husband has just discovered his wife is actually his cousin, he’s probably also questioning whether his mum knew about this all along and just kept it from him. Was he in fact a product of an affair between his mum and wife’s uncle? And why wasn’t he told he was marrying his cousin?

So many questions!! What would you do if you discovered you and your husband were related? Would it bother you?

  1. I wonder if either of them were in fact adopted and never told. Some adoptive parents do that as they are afraid of losing or having to share their children they love and have brought up as their own
