Discover a Secret Summer
Garden this school holiday at ‘The Box’

Vegecation will bring a touch of
magical mystery to Centro Box Hill this summer school holidays, as the North Precinct food court is transformed into a Secret Summer Garden designed to teach kids from paddock to plate how gardening, vegetables and cooking combined can create delicious meals.

There will be plenty to explore and even more to learn at the free educational holiday program, running 23 to 27 January 2012.
Nestled on a bed of grass will be a potting station and bug display, and a special colouring in competition that children can enter to win some prizes.
Kids will also get a chance to star in daily interactive dress up performances, found at the rear of t he magical garden.

The plant potting section will
focus on a different and surprising veggie each day:
Monday = Purple carrots
Tuesday = Striped eggplant
Wednesday = Dark green zucchini
Thursday = Striped beetroot
Friday = Veggie mix

From potting
their own plant to learning about bugs in the garden, kids will see how food can be transformed from a bud into something delicious you can put on a plate. Children will also be educated on how to make the most of the garden at this hazy time of year with water saving techniques for a healthy garden.

The Gould League, Australia’s oldest environmental education organisation, has put together a program especially for Centro Box Hill once again, designed to keep kids captivated these school holidays.

“So much happens behind the scenes at the bottom of your garden – the secret to a successful veggie patch lies deep within the soil and relies on the gentle balance of many environmental factors, from the bugs in the ground to the weather up above. We can’t wait to bring this exciting cycle to life for the children this school holiday,” says Anita Kosterlitz, Gould League’s Manager of Education and Training.

Clive Larkman, owner of Renaissance Herbs and unique horticulturalist with an eye for strange and interesting plant species, will be on hand to help the children pot their seedlings and learn more about the plants they are potting.

Vegecation provides parents with a school holiday activity they don’t need to feel guilty about as it is free, educational and, most importantly, fun.
